由于受到了约翰·柯川 (John Coltrane) 的熏陶，谢普在60年代 自由爵士乐的全盛时期粉墨登场，作为这类音乐风格极具象征意义的存在，他不断的发片、演出。大家都能明显地感觉到，与维纳斯唱片的合作给谢普本人的唱片带来了很大的改变。从柯川的名作《每次说再见》中可以感受到谢普淡泊的心境。
